Whose Eyes Matter to You?

One of the jobs that I have always had a hard time understanding is PR firms. Their job always seemed like they just tell you who would be upset and who would be pleased by your decisions. Always thinking about who would be upset or pleased by your decision is an awful way to live. I think it's because my personality thinks more in terms of the right decision despite how the decision is perceived. However, there is something that PR firms understand and that is that we care deeply about how we are perceived. We care so deeply about it that we are willing to pay a group to help us out with it.

Whose Eyes?

Whose eyes are of ultimate importance to you? They could be your parents, your spouse, your boss, your families, your friends, your leaders, or even your own eyes. This isn't to say that these people can't have profound wisdom and insight into your life, but they can tell you whose eyes you treasure the most in your life. Maybe a better way to describe it is who are you attempting to please the most in your life?

The Bible discusses the theme of God's eyes. We were created with dignity and worth by our creator even though we chose to "worship and serve the creature rather than the creator" (Romans 1). Since then, we have always cared about how we are seen because deep down we know that if someone saw our every intent, thought, and deed, then they might be embarrassed or worse reject us. Yet, God truly sees all of us, "And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account" (Hebrews 4:13). Even though he sees all of us, he still seeks, pursues, and offers to us himself as well as his perfect performance in our stead. Like the women at the well (John 4), he doesn't minimize our deeds or intentions, but meets us in forgiving love. It is because of him that we are not controlled ultimately by pleasing others or ourselves be of ultimate importance. It is because of him we can take off the mask and be honest with others in our lives about our porn or sex addiction or our Trauma. It is because of him that we become united with his people so we can navigate difficult times, gain wisdom, understand our choices, change, and experience the depth of how he views us.
