A Life of Surrender

One of the hardest things in life is relinquishing control. In an age where there is so much information at our fingertips, it is easy to think we control everything. One of the hardest things for a struggling porn/sex addict to do is surrender control. It is so hard to embrace the reality that you can’t fix yourself or others. It means you have to embrace that there is something broken about you just like everyone else. What does it look like to do recovery while having a posture of surrender?

A Surrendered Life

Most of my guys believe that they are living a life surrendered to God. However, the primary place God works through is his people. This is why when Jesus ascended, he left behind a people. Jesus and his people are so inseparable that even his people’s pain is Jesus’s pain (Acts 9:4-5). So how does this apply to surrendering? Well, to truly surrender to God and control means that you will have to surrender to his people. That can be in many ways like accountability, confessing your sins to them, or even giving up time to be with God’s people by going to church, inviting them into your life, or having a meal together. Are you opening up your life to the people of God to be inconvenienced? Are you opening up your life to where the focus isn’t just your addiction, but his people? A surrendered life doesn’t just look like you focusing on your issues, but it looks like getting involved in the people of God’s lives.
